GONE GIRL

Everything starts to go wrong on the day of the fifth wedding anniversary of Nick and Amy. Amy disappears and Nick becomes the prime suspect in her disappearance. There are signs of struggle in the house and Nick does not make things any easier by being less than honest with the police when they confront him.

As the weeks, pass and Amy’s case drags on more things become known that portray Nick in a very bad light no matter how hard he protests his innocence. What happened in Gone Girl is told from the different points of view by Nick and Amy and Gillian Flynn has managed to create a rather unpleasant and unreliable world that keeps on changing chapter by chapter.

Gone Girl is a psychological thriller that is layered and as you peel away each layer and read revelation after revelation, it becomes abundantly clear that the truth is something that both Amy and Nick have a huge problem with and as far as they are both concerned, it also does not exist from their point of view. Whilst the story starts, slowly it does build up and nothing is, as it seems in this book.

This has not been an easy book to read or review. With only three books under her belt, Gillian Flynn has already gained the reputation for writing dark books that don’t let up. In this case, it is her third book Gone Girl that is the case in point. In fact, when one comes to think of it and after reading Gone Girl the truth is much darker than one would have expected. It is a much more twisted and creepy novel than I would have expected. Gone Girl is brilliantly plotted and has suspense in spades from the start to the end. It is also splendidly constructed, imaginatively paced and undeniably chilling. The ending does not come quietly but with a shock. A page-turner and a thriller that is certainly worth reading. Without a doubt, this is going to be one of the best reads of the year.
