Sleepwalker is the latest novel by Karen Robards, a romantic thriller that moves quickly through a well thought out and strong plot.
Centring around rookie cop Micayla Lange, who arrests a man she discovers breaking into her old family friend, Nicco Marino's mansion, her troubles start as she pulls a gun on professional thief Jason Davis. He drops the bag he's stolen spilling it open to reveal photographs of Micayla's genial 'uncle' Nicco handing money to a number of Detroit's most powerful politicians and law-makers.
No-one was meant to see those photos, least of all a police officer, and with close circuit cameras capturing every moment of Micayla's realisation that Uncle Nicco is seriously involved with the mob, she may now be in mortal danger. Jason has a suggestion - perhaps if they team up, maybe there'll a chance they'll both get out alive. He's her only hope. But can she trust him with her life?
As I’ve said before, I quite like romance with my crime, but if you don’t, this is not your type of book. It is typical of a thriller, having a defined plot that centres on Micayla and Jason’s escape from the mansion and the hurdles they must overcome to stay alive, with the twist of their blossoming romance. It also has the happily ever after ending, albeit leaving you wanting more of the crime story.
A totally enjoyable book that has equal amounts of two genres and therefore even though it is a good thriller as well, it will not suit all crime readers. Personally, I enjoyed it and would recommend it to people who either already like that mix, or want to try something different.
