Cal Lovett is a true crime podcaster who has his own personal reasons for trying to help the families of missing people.

When the parents of a teenager who went missing years ago get in touch and beg for his help, he makes his way to Aberdeen, determined to try and make a difference. Perhaps even at the cost of his own family.

I do enjoy a well-written dual timeline novel and Unsolved was certainly one of those. Critchlow took us back at forth from the present day to the 1980s with ease and without the confusion that can sometimes beset this kind of structure. She has expertly woven in, and laid out, clues for the reader in both the past and present, making for an excellent mystery novel.

Cal’s dogged questioning and unpicking of secrets made Unsolved an insidious, chilling read and once I’d started, I couldn’t put it down. An excellent debut from Critchlow; there is no doubt she has a glittering career ahead of her. I await book 2 with excitement.
