The shooting of a photographer in a LA warehouse that has been converted into a studio is the starting point of the latest case for detective Milo Sturgis and psychologist Alex Delaware.

Prior to his death he was working on a project capturing homeless people living out their ‘dreams’ for the camera, that might be exploitative or simply naively well intentioned. Has one of the ‘dreamers’ reacted badly to being dumped back into harsh reality after their five minutes of fame, or does the motive for the crime lie in his background as the son of a billionaire with an unorthodox and chaotic family life?

Jonathan Kellerman has delivered the goods again, adding another instalment to a series that shows no sign of running out of steam. The chalk and cheese pairing of Sturgis and Delaware with each partner in this odd couple sparking off the best in the other.

The plot is satisfyingly complex with multiple suspects and, as is often the case with Kellerman’s books, it takes his readers to places they would otherwise never see. In this instance the shadow world of the homeless that exists below the shiny surface of the sunshine state. A harsh place where dreams die even faster than innocence and survival is a daily struggle.

A new Jonathan Kellerman novel is always something to look forward to, not least because he is one of the finest living exponents of the craft of writing crime stories. His latest is no exception.
