This new psychological novel from international best-selling author Holly Seddon is a treat to be welcomed; it’s her fifth since her outstanding 2016 debut with Try Not to Breathe. Her strength lies in her plotting and The Woman on the Bridge carries this asset forward brilliantly.
Charlotte has not had a good day. Meeting her old friend Anne with whom Charlotte runs her family firm Wilderwood Antiques, she is horrified at accusations being directed at her concerning financial irregularities in the books. Numbed with shock, she has driven over the Severn Bridge into Wales, heading for home as darkness falls. But then another bridge looms up, and on it she can see a woman clearly about to make a suicidal jump. Instinctively she rushes to help – and succeeds in saving her.
She has met Maggie. Maggie, like Charlotte, has problems which she shares with Charlotte, in Maggie’s case a stalker from the past. Sharing should help, but it doesn’t. Instead, it leads to a gripping plot which twists and turns both with psychological tension and dangers until it reaches a stunning climax.
