Adam Hayes is a man with a past he'd like to bury; trouble is a lot of powerful people from his past would like to see him buried instead. Working as a bush pilot in Africa flying medicines into remote communities his plane is brought down by extremists, landing him in a whole mess of trouble.

In short order Hayes finds himself enlisted to transport the daughter of a billionaire out of the country, then tasked with rescuing her from a gang of kidnappers. Just to add to his problems his former association with black-ops outfit Treadstone has made him a pawn in a deadly power game involving the US secret services.

Drawn from the world that gave us Jason Bourne this is a high-octane adventure set in the wilder parts of Africa. The sort of places where life is short, cheap and often ends violently. Law and order, such as it is depends on whoever pays the biggest bribe or shoots first.

Adam Hayes has little problem with the latter, although his ownership of something like a conscience makes things difficult. Hood used his background as a elite soldier to give the balletic bone crunching he engages in a hard edge of authenticity. The way grinding poverty and wealth rub together across the continent while corruption rubs its hands in the shadows is something he writes about perceptively.

This is an enjoyable outing in a new series set in a world where almost everything is for sale and trust is an early casualty in the fight for survival.
