For Killian, born a tinker, now enforcer, tough guy, negative equity property owner and realist, half a million is a lot of money. It could go a long way to solving his debts and smoothing his way into an early retirement. Of course, he has to work for it, but taking on the job of tracking down the runaway wife and daughters of Irish budget airline owner Richard Coulter shouldn’t be too difficult, should it?
But Killian hasn’t reckoned on two things. The first is Coulter’s wife, Rachel. She took with her a laptop holding the worst secret in the world for a man of Coulter’s standing… a secret guaranteed to bring down the power sharing elite in Northern Ireland if the contents ever reach the public domain.
The second thing is, Coulter isn’t sitting back and hoping Rachel will be found; he has also set a ruthless Russian killer on her tail, and that man’s orders do not include bringing her back - at all, much less in one piece.
Killian, who has vowed never to go back to his tinker upbringing, finds that retreating to that close, protective community is actually far more compelling than he would have thought when he eventually finds Rachel – especially when he discovers what her intended fate is and has seen for himself the awful contents of the laptop she is hiding.
And there’s the rub; because now, so has Killian, which puts him in mortal danger, from Coulter, his Russian killer, and anyone else who might feel threatened by it. But hiding where he feels safest takes him back among people with no regards for the rules of Coulter’s society, and who will lay down their lives to protect one of their own.
And Killian in turn will not stand by and allow Rachel and her children to suffer.
Tough all the way through to the very end, with a compelling central character who has more principles than he thought, this is a fast-paced tale full of grit, controlled violence and no-nonsense tension. But that’s not all; it has the kind of delivery which makes you keep reading, even when tiredness and the call of normal life tells you to stop.
A great read.
