Two women, two life stories, one common mistake.

Poppy and Betty are united by events that shaped their lives and changed who they are now. Their lapse in judgement came at a cost but who had to pay the ultimate price?

Poppy, a successful businesswoman, is living a content life until a blast from her past disturbs the peace. Running into Matthew, her first love, after a 20-year absence brings back memories and long suppressed feelings. Full of inner turmoil and anger, she does something she will forever regret.  Someone dies a horrific death and now Poppy is interrogated during a trial. What is she guilty of?

By contrast, Betty’s life of a working-class young woman during the late sixties and early seventies was very different from that of her daughter-in-law’s. Her fascinating background story is revealed in letters, addressed to Poppy. Being stuck with a controlling husband but daring to dream of a better, happier life, she learnt the hard way the power of compromise and self-sacrifice. Guilt-ridden by her actions, but stronger than before, she vows to make amends and never give up hope.

Jane Corry, author of I Looked Away, Blood Sisters and My Husband's Wife, is back with a compelling domestic thriller. I made a mistake is a family drama, laced with murder, suspense and regrets. The what ifs that are haunting the two women, the opportunities -or rather lack of- during different eras, and the realization how quickly life can change make for a thought provoking read. The different narratives and timelines effortlessly intertwine, giving us a better insight into each character; their views on motherhood, marriage and love in general reveal the deeper layers of the story. I found myself completely engaged and captivated by these women’s perspective on life. It is a must-read for anyone looking for an emotional and gripping thriller.
