Travelling on the London Underground Bob Shaw catches sight of an old friend standing further along the platform. Nothing too surprising about that, apart from the fact that he died several weeks earlier.

Convinced that he wasn't mistaken Bob, accompanied by his wife Annie, sets out to find out what really happened. Did his friend, a respected scientist with a seemingly happy marriage, have a secret life from which he could only escape by taking his own death?

Along the way they come into contact with a deadly conspiracy involving a secret weapons system that the Russians want to see disabled at any cost. Our own secret services are willing to resort to equally ruthless means to stop them.

This enjoyable old school spy thriller takes the familiar theme of ordinary people put into extraordinary situations and gives it a modern twist. The plot makes an overt nod towards the 2018 Salisbury poisonings, making the excesses of both sides all too believable.

Bassett has a journalist's gift for conveying intense action in a handful of words and has created an engaging duo of unofficial investigators. In the best way possible this book is reminiscent of classic British B movies. It is certainly an enjoyable second outing for what will hopefully be a long running series.
