Warning: If Coranavirus is depressing you, do not watch this movie.

Based on the true story of the Long Island serial killer, this one is a downer from the start. No one smiles, no one cracks jokes. It’s grim and serious, which reflects its serious subject matter.

Mari Gilbert’s daughter Shannan, a sex worker, goes missing. No one cares. But Mari is a particularly bloody-minded woman, and she persists in pushing the powers that be from the governor of the state down, to keep looking. In the end the authorities find sixteen bodies or parts of bodies.

Serious enough for you?

Also, another warning: It’s shot with such low lighting it’s almost impossible to pick out individuals in the gloom. Maybe that’s because it’s intercut with real footage from the period. As Mari, Amy Ryan puts in a stunning performance.

By the time it was finished I was exhausted.
