Advertising executive Alex Carmichael lives with his second wife Natalie, and his daughter Jade, from his first marriage, which ended in his first wife’s death from cancer, harmoniously in Brighton.

Then, one Friday, when he’s out entertaining clients, their house catches fire, and everything goes to the bad.

You see, Natalie hasn’t been perfectly honest with Alex. About her past. Somehow, Alex realises all is not as it should be, and he turns detective. Even worse, there is more than a suggestion that the fire was arson. Who dun it, and why?

Then, the story moves back in time when Natalie wasn’t Natalie at all. A different world. Gangsters, drugs, murder. I’m not going to say more, just that the book becomes better and better. Her secrets, then her husband’s come out like short, sharp jabs to the solar plexus.

The Second Wife is a terrific slow burner that is just that. The first part takes your hand gently, then rockets off like a runaway racehorse. Fleet ramps up the tension and keeps the pages turning until she nail-biting climax. Don’t miss this, the follow up to her excellent debut, The House Swap. Can’t wait for the next one.
