Who did you tell? is Lesley Kara’s follow-on thriller after her best-selling debut novel The Rumour. The author is an alumna of the Faber Academy ‘Writing a Novel’ course, and Who did you tell? is a first-class advertisement for that.

The narrator, Astrid, is a young alcoholic currently in rehab and living with her mother. At their seaside home, she is struggling to recover from more than just drink, however. Her past life and former lover still dominate her thoughts, despite her best efforts when she attends Alcoholics Anonymous [AA]. She tries to conform by recounting to the group just how she had gone astray and admitting the wrongs she had done to others, but nothing works. Then she meets Josh – but the struggle grows worse dogging her every step of the way as the threat both to her sanity and life looms larger and larger to her final battle.

The pace of this novel is riveting, although I found it hard to identify with Astrid for the first chapter or two, which for my taste played too much to the gods. But once I did and the plot took on a different dimension, I was hooked and was with right there with Astrid until the very end.
