When Freya is offered a job at a hot start-up company, she thinks that finally her life is turning around. Brought up in a variety of foster homes, Freya has had to work for everything in her life, and the new job could be her big break. Things seem to be looking up even more when her colleague Jay shows interest in her, and they start dating.
But not everything is going well for Freya. Her colleague Nicole (who happens to be Jay’s ex) seems intent on making Freya’s life a misery. Finally, tired of the bullying, Freya and Jay concoct a prank to get revenge on Nicole. But the following morning, Nicole is found dead. Did Freya and Jay’s prank go too far?
The story unfolds from two main view-points: Freya’s and Isla’s, a journalist who is trying to get to the bottom of Nicole’s murder. The timeline jumps about all over the place: with one chapter three months before the murder, the next - the day before the murder, then - the next four years before, and so on. Not being a fan of non-linear timelines, I found this somewhat disorientating, although this is likely the author’s intention so the twist at the climax has more of an impact - because of the disjointed timeline.
There are moments of misdirection and some of the characters are hard to like, but nevertheless, this is a suspenseful read that kept me turning the pages.
Fans of psychological thrillers will enjoy this book.
