This collection of short stories from well-established mystery writers revolves around the theme of ‘summer’.
Some of these tales are about classic detectives going on holiday, but unable to get away from investigating murders; such as Ruth Rendell’s Detective Inspector Wexford in “Achilles Heel”, and Dorothy L Sayers’ Lord Peter Wimsey in “The Unsolved Puzzle of the Man with No Face”. In “The Adventure of the Lion’s Mane,” Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous creation Sherlock Holmes emerges from his retirement villa to solve one last case. Some of the stories are set on beaches, or in holiday destinations such as Italy and Dubrovnik, while some of the stories simply take place in summer.
It’s an eclectic mix with some illustrious literary names in this collection: Ellis Peters, G K Chesterton, Margery Allingham and John Dickson Carr, to add just a few more to the mix. None of the stories are particularly long, some better than others, however all of them are entertaining, and perfect for reading whilst lying on the beach.
If you’re looking for some holiday reading this summer, this one should definitely go in the suitcase.
