From a very young age, Nora only had her father present in her life. When he was found dead, everything pointed to suicide. Fast forward to the present and Nora finds she’s being followed by someone who claims to have known her father many years ago, but the information he provides causes her to question everything she thought she knew, and it means that she will have to confront that painful event head on - if she’s to discover the truth. For Nora, there’s a sense of how little one knows about those closest to us, and more importantly - ourselves.
Meanwhile, PI Jon Brazuka is doing some investigations of his own, involving the overdose death of a billionaire’s mistress, and the case appears to have some connection to Nora.
Author Sheena Kamal takes us to the mean and gritty streets of Detroit in Nora’s search for her past, and whilst one can appreciate the importance and impact it has for her, it is in fact Jon Brazuka’s case that has the most appeal, depicting as it does, the viciousness of the underworld, and the fear and tension that accompanies it. Unfortunately this means that Nora’s investigation failed to capture my enthusiasm.
To fully understand the story-line I would recommend reading ‘The Lost Ones’ (aka ‘Eyes Like Mine’) the previous book in the series. I don’t believe that the author has given sufficient backstory to fully appreciate Nora’s character and where she’s coming from, and what makes her tick.
There were parts of the book that I did enjoy, and later the tension increased substantially, but sadly I felt a distinct disconnection with the characters, there was nevertheless enough promise to suggest a compelling series to come.
