Karen spent 30+ years as a Civil Servant, mostly in Revenue which is where she developed my absolute hatred of poor writing skills! Her favourite genre is now crime/thriller/police procedural/legal genre with the occasional foray into chick-lit and general fiction.
This historical crime thriller is set in post-World War Two Hamburg, around the time the new currency is introduced in Germany.
The narrative centres around Detective Frank Stave, who is trying to solve several apparently unconnected cases - and the difficulties he encounters.
Though the twists and turns as we follow Stave, can confuse, thankfully it is a short book, with a story that grips; but for readers, the highlight is the historical setting, and the insight into life in post-War Germany.
This is the third in a series featuring Chief Inspector Frank Stave, but the first I have read. I did not feel at a disadvantage having not read the preceding books as it can be read as a fast-paced stand-alone.
I would recommend it to those who want something a little different, and who enjoy a historical backdrop.
