A Dark So Deadly

Robert lives in North East England. He works in Recruitment by day, and is usually to be found knee deep in a pile of books as a reader and reviewer by night. He has recently signed with The Blair Partnership, and his debut crime novel, What Falls Between the Cracks was released in Spring 2018.

To say that DC Callum McGregor's attempt to rise up through the ranks has stalled, is an understatement. He is under investigation for messing up evidence at a crime scene.

Now living in a cramped flat he can barely afford with his pregnant girlfriend; DC McGregor is kicked sideways into the so-called "Misfit Mob", a home for anyone out of favour in the ranks of Blue; and a dumping ground for the cases nobody wants.

When an ancient mummy is found at the local tip, Callum is saddled with the task of tracking down which Museum it has come from. When he stumbles across links between this seemingly mundane case, and a spate of missing young men, he's determined to redeem himself; despite little help from colleagues.

I can't remember the last time I laughed so loudly reading a crime novel. MacBride captures the gallows humour of day-to-day police life so perfectly, that I defy any reader to keep a straight face traversing this narrative. The light hearted moments complement, rather than distract from what is a creative and well-orchestrated crime thriller. The dialogue is razor sharp, plotting perfectly paced, and packed with larger than life characters such as Franklin, Mother and McAdams who bring this tale to life; coupled to multiple side-plots help keep the pace brisk.

I sincerely hope it's not the last time I get to visit with the ‘Misfit Mob’.
