Ever since she can remember Claire has wanted to be a mother, finally after enduring years of disappointment her dream is about to come true. If only her family could be more supportive or at least understand her rising levels of anxiety.

Bruised by their seeming indifference and the dismissive attitudes of her boss and the medical professionals she encounters Claire turns to social media. Finding there a community of mothers and mothers to be committed to promoting ‘natural motherhood’.

They seem warm and supportive, a sisterhood untied against those who would spoil to most special moment of their lives. As her due date approaches and her anxiety levels ratchet ever higher something happens that suggests she may have become embroiled with something far darker.

This powerful and often disturbing debut novel is a fable for our unsettled times. One that explores theme around the pressures placed on mothers to make life changing decisions, the addictive power of social media and the way our increasing generalised social isolation can make coercive conformity look like comforting certainty.

Silvani catches perfectly the contradictions of the information age, the pressure people feel to curate their lives into an image of impossible perfection, and the fact that despite being better connected than at any other time in history we are also increasingly isolated.

Although the subject matter is misleadingly domestic this book is every inch a thriller, one that finds menace just under the surface of everyday life and prompts its readers to ask uncomfortable questions about their own culpability.
