Jon Stephen Fink
Born on the tenth anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, in Philadelphia, PA. Raised in Los Angeles. Family moved to Brussels in 1970, when my European experience began. Couldn’t shake the feeling of familiarity overseas and alienation at home…except for New York. I’ve always wondered why I didn’t hail from Manhattan. Came to understand my deeper motives between the ages of 19 and 22 at CalArts. Dedicated myself to writing. Which was a pursuit that needed to be supported by other means…
Having failed to land a job as a driver for a funeral home, I took work as a copy editor at a magazine publisher specializing in adult entertainment…the ooh-la-la kind. My first assignment was in the office of Adam magazine, where on Day One I earned a quick and chuckling rebuke from editor Norm Winski for red-penciling his galleys with the correct four-letter English spelling of the noun “cum.” By the end of my stint six months later I was editing, with chilling ease, essays like Linda’s Sperm Diet and composing page after page of captions for girl-on-girl photo spreads.
