Stephen Bates read Modern History at New College, Oxford, before working as a journalist for the BBC, Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail and Guardian, where for twenty-three years he was a political correspondent, European Affairs editor and religious and royal correspondent. The Poisoner is his sixth book. He is married with three children and lives in Kent.
